Nursery Industry Statistics Project
What is the project?
NY21000 Nursery Industry Statistics is a five-year data collection project to capture the value and volume of Greenlife production in Australia and provide growers with an interactive benchmarking tool for each year of the project. Overviews of the last four years, as well as case studies, nursery papers, and facts at a glance are available for download below. The project will also deliver an industry economic contributions analysis which estimates the flow on effects of the nursery industry into other sectors of the economy, and a PESTLE analysis (in 2023-24) which will provide a framework to analyse the key factors influencing a business from the outside.
Business Benchmarking Tool
GIA has partnered with Down to Earth Research and ACIL Allen Consulting to deliver valuable statistics and research for the greenlife industry. Data is collected from around 300 production nurseries each year between October and December. From this data, a benchmarking tool is produced which allows businesses to compare their business to others of similar sizes and production systems. You can request the benchmarking tool below.
2023-24 Production Nursery Statistics Questionnaire
Do you want to help inform the next benchmarking tool? The next survey will commence 8 October 2023. A random sample of interested production nurseries are selected to participate - if you have participated previously, the interview team may be in contact with you for this year's survey. Following confirmation of participation, Down to Earth Research will be in touch with more details.
To express your interest in participating for the first time, please contact Daniel Watson (Down to Earth Research) on:

Why participate?
Benefits of participation include:
- access to the benchmarking tool to gain an understanding of how your business is tracking compared to others, and the state of the industry as a whole
- assisting in providing timely, accurate, and reliable statistics to the nursery industry
- your data helps to advocate for the industry, particularly in discussions with government – the industry needs robust stats to support these conversations
- industry and grower decision making
- resource prioritisation
- investment evaluation.
You can choose to complete the survey over the phone, or answer in your own time and return via email.
