Yarralumla Nursery – growing Canberra for over a century
19 March 2025
For more than 110 years, Yarralumla Nursery has been shaping Canberra’s landscapes, supplying high-quality plants and setting the standard for Best Management Practices (BMP) in horticulture. As one of Australia’s oldest nurseries, Yarralumla remains at the forefront of the industry through innovation, sustainability and a commitment to excellence.
Operating on a 10-hectare site with a team of 30 dedicated staff, Yarralumla Nursery supplies plants to landscape contractors, councils, nurseries, government directorates and community programs like the Free Plant Issue. Originally focused on suburban greening, the nursery pivoted to wholesale landscaping in the1990s to meet market demand. "Our goal is to be an innovative nursery respected for the excellence of our products," said Dr Matthew Parker, Senior Director. "Integrity, collaboration, and sustainability drive every decision we make."
Leading with best practice
The nursery’s BMP journey began in 2015 with its first Nursery Industry Accreditation Scheme Australia (NIASA) audit, providing a roadmap for improvement. By 2017, key upgrades were in place, including enhanced growing surfaces for healthier plants, improved record-keeping for greater traceability and more efficient irrigation systems to minimise water use.
"We strategically invested in upgrades, from covering soil bays to expanding drip irrigation," said Belinda Ryan, Production Operations Manager. "These changes not only reduced water use but also streamlined operationsand strengthened our sustainability efforts."
In 2019, the nursery advanced further, launching a water treatment facility to improve water quality and pest management.
A benchmark for the industry
Commitment to best practices has revolutionised Yarralumla Nursery, with improved propagation facilities boosting plant quality, automated systems streamlining operations and innovative growing substrates enhancing sustainability.
"Better drainage and hygiene have reduced pest and disease outbreaks, while consistent irrigation schedules have strengthened plant resilience," said Belinda.
Looking ahead
Balancing innovation with heritage hasn’t come without challenges, but the nursery remains focused on the future.
"Every improvement comes with an upfront cost, but the long-term benefits far outweigh the challenges.
Staying ahead ensures we remain competitive," said Matthew.
Over the next decade, the nursery plans to finalise NIASA accreditation, pursue additional certifications, and invest in advanced technologies to boost productivity and quality.
"In five to ten years, we want Yarralumla Nursery to be recognised not just for the quality of our plants, but for the sustainable practices and community responsibility that underpin everything we do," said Belinda.
Through its commitment to continual improvement, Yarralumla Nursery is ensuring its long-term success while making a lasting impact on Canberra’s green spaces.
