R&D update: portal helps growers deal with dry times
27 May 2024
To support growers, Hort Innovation has created a ‘dealing with dry times’ portal that hosts a suite of resources and information to help inform decision making amid drought and dry conditions.
It was established following the September 2023 Bureau of Meteorology declaration that El Niño and a positive Indian Ocean Dipole were underway, and that warm and dry conditions were likely ahead.
With dry weather in parts of Australia now predicted to continue as we head into winter, this portal provides key resources and information that will help you navigate the forecast dry times.
Key nursery related resources on offer:
- water management techniques – strategies to optimise water use, aiming to maximise water use efficiency across various farming practices
- drought resistant crops – guides to selecting and cultivating less water-dependent crops
- financial assistance – information on accessing grants and subsidies to aid operations impacted by drought, ensuring financial support during critical times.
Additional resources include:
- Australian Government resources – programs for drought, disaster and rural support.
- State resources – tailored support from local state departments, providing region-specific guidance and assistance.
- Mental health support – resources aimed at supporting the mental well-being of farmers facing the stresses of drought.
- Industry-specific research – ongoing research and development focused on water use efficiency, climate impact preparedness and sustainable agricultural practices.
Hort Innovation extends its support through this comprehensive list of tools and information in collaboration with government bodies and organisations, such as drought, disaster and rural support and the On-farm Emergency Water Infrastructure Rebate Scheme.

We also encourage you to contact peak industry bodies and government agencies for extra information and regulatory advice.
