R&D update: Colourwise Nursery blossoms with GIA’s Extension Officer expertise
23 May 2024
Colourwise Nursery, based in Peats Ridge, New South Wales, is a family-owned nursery that prioritises premium quality in all aspects of its operations.
Colourwise is primarily a wholesale nursery that specialises in suppling quality potted plants to businesses, including small retailers and major stores like Bunnings, as well as larger independent nurseries and landscapers.
With the guidance of Greenlife Industry Australia’s (GIA) Extension Officers, the nursery has experienced a remarkable phase of growth and innovation.
Colourwise Nursery’s Production Manager, James Scorer, said the partnership has produced many benefits.
"Three years ago, we teamed up with our state GIA Extension Officer, Colin Hunt, to gain Nursery Industry Accreditation Scheme Australia (NIASA) accreditation, aiming for long-term goals and better practices,” James said.
“GIA has played a big role in the nursery, giving us a new way of thinking and encouraging creative ideas.
“We’ve made changes in processes related to plant health, chemical use and training programs.”
Benefits of the collaboration
The partnership with GIA has catalysed significant advancements at Colourwise Nursery.
“Our partnership with our GIA Extension Officer has streamlined chemical use, improved ventilation and recycling initiatives, and increased plant health at our nursery,” James said.
“Educational programs, such as mini tech courses, and pest and disease diagnosis classes, have elevated the knowledge base of our nursery staff, fostering a culture of continuous learning.”
Where to next?
Continuous engagement with GIA Extension Officers ensures that Colourwise remains aligned with the latest industry trends and regulations, securing its position at the forefront of the horticultural sector.
“By sharing knowledge, being creative and aiming for excellence, Colourwise Nursery not only resolved immediate issues but also charted a course for long-term success.”
As Colourwise Nursery continues to grow and evolve, its strategic use of expert advice and openness to new practices have cemented its status as a leader in sustainable and successful nursery operations.
