NGINA invites you to celebrate Sydney Trade Day’s 50th birthday!
By Gabrielle Stannus, Communications Coordinator
The Nursery and Garden Industry NSW and ACT (NGINA)’s Sydney Trade Day started in 1972 at Castle Hill, before moving to Rouse Hill and then finding its most recent home at the Hawkesbury Showground. 2022 marks the fiftieth year of continuous operation of this industry event, so NGINA is hosting a party to celebrate on Wednesday 17 August.
Sydney Trade Day or Market Day as it was known in 1972 was started by the Container Growers Group of NSW in response to the emerging need for a better way to market the greenlife they produced. The site of the first Sydney Trade Day was a disused poultry shed on Victoria Road at Castle Hill. The first market was an outstanding success with 25 businesses attending.
The growing popularity of the market soon prompted discussions about the purchase of a permanent site which would also serve as headquarters for the association. The first Trade Day was held at the new home of horticulture at Annangrove Rd, Rouse Hill.
Trade Day moved to its new home at Hawkesbury Showground on 16 August 2017 where it continues to operate today, most recently moving into a contemporary new pavilion at the Western end of the property where the 50th birthday celebrations will be held.
“We look forward to celebrating this milestone occasion and welcome all friends both old and new to join us!” says Anita Campbell, NGINA’s Chief Executive Officer, “Take a walk down memory lane and enjoy our free morning tea and cake-cutting ceremony.”
“There will be free souvenirs and a chance to check out the new facility,” Anita adds, “Entry is free this month, so we hope to see you there!”
NGINA would also like to extend an invitation to new visitors looking to purchase greenlife, garden supplies and gift ware to attend their first Trade Day for free.
Exhibitors will be stocking a diverse range of plants from every climate and displaying an impressive array of ancillary products and services. Sydney Trade Day also provides a fabulous networking opportunity by allowing members of the industry to cross paths with their peers and stay in touch with what is happening in the industry.
