Garden City Plastics to profile New Recycling initiative at Healthy Plants Healthy People Conference

Garden City Plastics (GCP) is not only Australia’s largest supplier of pots and containers for the greenlife, landscape and garden industry, but is a distributor for some of the most reliable brands in growing media, plant health, plant nutrition, hardware and allied products. For over 35 years, most of GCP black plastic containers have been made from recycled Polypropylene (5) plastic through the collection of post-industrial waste, washed and prepared for next lifecycle manufacturing. A disappointingly small amount of this material has been able to be reclaimed from Horticultural growers.

Believing that pots no longer need to go into land fill, GCP have recently launched a new recycling program closing the loop for horticultural containers in Australia. The goal of 10 million kilograms of recycled Polypropylene (5) per year by 2021 has been set by the company and GCP is now actively engaged with Growers, Retailers and Recyclers Australia and NZ wide to launch a closed loop network for recovery of post-consumer horticultural containers. The motivation for this work, is a desire to help the whole Greenlife Industry demonstrate its leadership to consumers as committed closed loop recyclers doing great things for communities and keeping recyclables out of landfill.

GCP is a family business which was established in 1975 by Len and Austral Wilson on the site of the Wilson Indoor Nursery at Heatherton in Victoria. The plastics container manufacturing plant was initially established as a reliable source of containers that could be designed for horticultural purposes, competitively priced and available when required. In 1992 the facility moved to Monbulk, Victoria.
