Progressing action towards a circular economy for plastics  

The Australia, New Zealand and Pacific Islands Plastics Pact (ANZPAC) has released a new strategic document, the ANZPAC Roadmap to 2025, which outlines the approach required by key players across the entire plastics value chain to achieve the ANZPAC Regional Plastic Targets by 2025.

The ANZPAC Roadmap to 2025 sets out a pathway that will substantially change our relationship with plastic packaging to be more sustainable and, ultimately, develop a circular economy for plastics in the Oceania region. It identifies and outlines the responsibilities of each organisation across the supply chain and aligns them to the major outcomes of each target:

• Target 1: Eliminate unnecessary and problematic plastic packaging through redesign, innovation, and alternative (reuse) delivery models.
• Target 2: 100% of plastic packaging will be reusable, recyclable, or compostable by 2025
• Target 3: Increase plastic packaging collected and effectively recycled by 25% for each geography within the ANZPAC region
• Target 4: Average of 25% recycled content in plastic packaging across the region

This document is the result of extensive discussions between more than 100 organisations across Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific Islands over the past year and highlights what can be achieved when we work together as a region to overhaul our relationship with plastic packaging and develop long-term sustainable solutions.
