Greenlife Industry Australia is pleased to welcome Barry Naylor as its new Plant Protection Officer. Based in Brisbane, Barry’s role will operate throughout Queensland and northern New South Wales under the levy funded ‘National Biosecurity and Sustainable Plant Production Program’ (NY20001).
With experience spanning almost 40 years in nursery production and horticulture, Barry brings with him a strong background in quality plant production, project management, and tertiary qualifications in horticulture.
“I’m excited to join the Greenlife Industry Australia team, and look forward to working closely with growers to promote high health plant production, achieve sustainability efficiencies and foster innovation within individual businesses,” Barry said.
Owner of a second generation production nursery until 2005, Barry has been involved in industry affairs since the 1980’s. Previous industry roles in NIASA BMP adoption, EcoHort education and adoption, BMP (Best Management Practice) cost benefit analysis, climate change adaptation, invasive plants and natural disaster recovery and resilience compliment decades of experience as a grower of high quality plants.
As a fourth generation horticulturist, Barry says “it’s in his blood” and he is excited to be able to share his experience and encourage growers, media suppliers and greenlife markets on adoption and integration of BMP. “NIASA, EcoHort and BioSecure HACCP are extremely useful tools to achieve high quality sustainable plant production, and I look forward to providing advice and support to facilitate the continued growth of our thriving industry.”
As Plant Protection Officer, Barry would like to use his experience to encourage growers in utilising the Australian Plant Production Standard (APPS) to develop a sustainable approach to plant health, biosecurity and best management practice. “Through collaboration with production nurseries, growing media manufacturers and greenlife markets, my goal is to help businesses on a path to continual improvement” Barry said.
As Plant Protection Officer, Barry will take on the following roles and responsibilities:
- Provide on-site support to industry stakeholders in the implementation of key plant protection and sustainable production aspects of the programs within the Australian Plant Production Standard.
- Contribute to the ongoing development and implementation of the Australian Plant Production Standard; delivering a range of BMP, sustainability, plant protection and biosecurity services across NIASA, EcoHort and BioSecure HACCP.
- Industry engagement and liaison with production nurseries, greenlife markets and growing media manufacturers throughout QLD and northern NSW across all aspects of sustainable plant production.
