Nursery Levy

The Nursery Levy commonly known as the Pot Levy or Container Levy, is a statutory industry levy paid on potted plants that are produced in Australia. The levy is based on the action of putting a plant into a container with potting media for growing on or for sale and is currently set at 5%.

The Nursery Levy is usually paid by nursery industry businesses at the point of purchase of plant pots where manufacturers act as collection agents for the Australian Government.  The Australian Government collects the levy and passes the funds on to Hort Innovation.

Hort Innovation is a horticultural research and development corporation which has been formed under legislation.   They operate under a Deed of Agreement with the Department of Agriculture, Water and the Environment.  Under the Deed, Hort Innovation is required to target activities and measure performance against a principles-based approach to accountability.  Hort Innovation works with industry to make strategic investments in R&D and marketing using the levy funds collected.  R&D investments also attracting additional financial contributions from the Australian Government.

As the prescribed peak industry body listed in the legislation, Greenlife Industry Australia have a responsibility to hold Hort Innovation, as the investment manager for the levies, accountable for the decisions made in relation to the Nursery Fund.  The Association through the Strategic Investment Advisory Panel contributes to the oversight of the investment of the nursery industry R&D and marketing levies to ensure the investment projects are run effectively, efficiently, and deliver practical and profitable outputs for industry.
